Kyogen · Established Kyoto 1981
Unique fusions of noh & kyogen techniques and spirit interpreting Shakespeare, Yeats, Beckett, and original bilingual works.
A bare stage, a masked actor, a clown:
gestures and chant resonating profoundly beyond borders
What is NOHO
Founded in Kyoto in 1981 by kyogen actor Shigeyama Akira and American director Jonah Salz. NOHO has performed on noh stages and studio theatres across Japan, and at the Edinburgh Fringe, the Avignon Festival, New York’s La MaMa and Asia Society.
Each production assembles actors, dancers, and musicians from both traditional noh-kyogen and modern performance to explore the expressive shapes and sounds at the boundaries
